While exploring the nearby caves south of Port Zoon–caves you would often flee to when when the judging looks of her parents and parents’ friends became too much. Arianna loved the caves too. She would sing in them and both of you would bathe in the echo of beautiful melodious songs that left you ensorcelled. Her singing was welcome always, but in the caves, it was magic.
While exploring, Arianna found a bright blue crystal lodged between a couple of large rocks and half-submerged in the rising tide.
Together, you pull the crystal from the rocks. It’s covered in calcium carbuncles, a few muscles clinging to the rock, and other organisms from the sea that made their home among the vibrant color of the crystal.
Arianna gave it to you at your last secret rendezvous, just before you set out from Port Zoon. She has cleared off the calcium and other debris, cleaning it best she could but is still a bit of a dull lump of clear blue rock.
It’s the potential of the thing, she said, as she saw your raised brow in question. It’s up to you to find out what it’ll be.
It was this moment that inspired your interest in jewel crafting. Even before you joined the Monastery, you would spend hours sanding and finishing the rock, breaking through its dullness, but harnessed its potential on it once you learned the tools of the trade.
The crystal is just that, a common blue crystal, inherently worth a couple of gold coin to the right buyer. But with your skill applied, similar craftsmanship has brought 20x the price. It would take extraordinary circumstances for you to sell this particular piece, however.
